4 Ways to Keep Entertained Without Electricity
We’ve all been there: it’s your day off, you’re at home and ready to enjoy some small creature comforts when boom, the power goes out. You can’t spend all day doing chores – you deserve better than that.
So what can you do? Well, the number of options might surprise you.
1. Learn a New Skill
Have you ever wanted to learn something like origami, knitting, woodworking or painting? If you’re aware you’ll be without electricity ahead of time, it’s always a good idea to check out a book or save a few videos to your cell phone ahead of time.
You don’t need much to start and you can start learning immediately. Work with what you have available, then invest in the resources you need when you can.
Don’t worry if you don’t get it completely right the first time – even the masters needed to start somewhere.
2. Read a Book
Don’t knock it till you try it! Reading can be a great way to escape into a wide range of exciting, fantasy worlds or even just increase your skill set.
Most public libraries also have internet access available, as well as a range of educational and fun programmes. You could probably also find a plug point to charge your phone, if you look hard enough!
3. Exercise
One-hundred per cent free and normally 100% avoidable if you had anything else to do while the lights are off. However, if you’re sitting at home and bored of staring at the wall, why not use this opportunity to improve your physical health?
There are several fitness apps available that don’t require mobile data to use – bonus points for no annoying adverts! Otherwise, you could also look at putting together a simple workout regime for yourself with some research.
4. Play Brain Games
Most puzzle or brain games can become truly addictive if you give them half a chance.
Sudoku is the perfect game if you enjoy numbers. Crosswords can be a great way to increase your vocabulary and language skills. Finally, the Zebra Puzzle – otherwise known as Einstein’s Riddle – is a logic game that can keep you engaged for hours on end.
